How ICWA Can Keep Pain at Bay

Even the healthiest, most active adults will experience aches and pains. A particularly long or strenuous workout can linger in the muscles for days. Many times you can work out the soreness, but as colder temperatures set into Albuquerque, you may find that your aches and pains don’t go away. They may even worsen.

If cold weather brings pain, get relief with a pain management program at the Institute of Community Wellness and Athletics (ICWA).

Cold Weather and Pain—The Connection

Cold weather can introduce or exacerbate muscle and joint soreness, and many suffer through it without ever understanding the connection. There are two main reasons why cold weather brings pain:

  1. Cold fronts involve significant changes in air pressure, and that, in turn, affects how fluid moves (or resists movement) around joints. If you already have inflammation or have sensitive joints or other areas because of a past injury or surgery, you likely feel drops and spikes in barometric pressure.
  2. Cold weather is often accompanied by a more sedentary lifestyle because, well, who wants to go out in the cold to go to the gym, much less actually workout outside. The lack of movement leads to stiff joints, sore muscles and the buildup of toxins in the tissues.

For some people, seasonal pain may be related to chronic pain resulting from a medical condition like fibromyalgia or RSD.
