CrossFit: Weights and Weightlifting

CrossFit is a training program designed to build strength, stamina and endurance. To do that, you will perform exercises that involve weight-lifting challenges. At ICWA’s Big Barn CrossFit, we make sure you perform weight bearing exercises properly to ensure your safety and maximum fitness benefit.

Weights in CrossFit

Nearly every CrossFit workout involves some type of weight-bearing exercise. However, many of them involve using your bodyweight, like pushups and pullups. Still, there are a number of exercises that use actual weighted objects, such as:

  • Barbell (just the bar or bar and appropriate bumper plates)
  • Dumbbells
  • Kettlebells
  • Medicine ball

Our box is equipped with all the weight equipment you need for every WOD.

The Importance of Proper Weightlifting Form during CrossFit WODs

Not every weight-bearing exercise involves a weightlifting motion, but many do. And when they do, your form is of the utmost importance in order to prevent injury.

The ICWA training team have the skill and experience to assess and correct form—and quickly—to prevent you from forming bad habits that put your body at risk. We also have a number of introductory level classes, including Intro to CrossFit and Weightlifting Level I as well as individual training sessions, to ensure you know and execute proper weightlifting form every time.

CrossFit at Home

When you do CrossFit at ICWA, you get the benefit of in-house equipment and trained eyes on your form. But there are some days you just can’t make it to the box. When you can’t, you can still do the WOD at home, and the ICWA trainers can help.

Our training team can help you find household substitutes you may use for weights or substitute exercises that utilize body weight instead of a piece of equipment. We can also give you tips and cautions to help you maintain proper form when no one else is watching.
